Overview

EN ISO 1140:2021 (ISO 1140:2021) specifies requirements for polyamide fibre ropes in common constructions: 3‑strand hawser‑laid, 4‑strand shroud‑laid, 8‑strand braided and 12‑strand braided ropes intended for general service. The standard covers designation rules, construction and manufacture requirements, physical properties (linear density and minimum breaking strength, MBS), marking and delivery. It supersedes EN ISO 1140:2012 and works alongside other rope standards for testing and vocabulary.

Physical properties: linear density (ktex) and minimum breaking strength (MBS) values are specified in tables for each construction and reference number. Linear density is measured under reference tension per ISO 2307. MBS relates to new dry ropes; wet breaking strength is typically 10–20% lower and ropes must be fully immersed 24 h before wet testing.
Terminations and strength: the tables provide different MBS values for unspliced ropes and ropes with eye‑spliced terminations (splices reduce MBS compared with unspliced).
