Overview
ISO 10261:2021 specifies a standardized product identification numbering (PIN) system for earth‑moving machinery (as defined in ISO 6165). The standard defines the required content, structure, character set, marking locations and durability requirements for a unique 17‑character PIN assigned by the manufacturer. Although targeted at earth‑moving machines, the ISO 10261 PIN can also be used on other off‑road work machines. It does not apply to components or attachments.

- PIN structure: a single horizontal string of 17 alphanumeric characters divided into four fields -
- WMC (World Manufacturer Code): positions 1–3 (3 alphanumeric characters)
- MDS (Machine Descriptor Section): positions 4–8 (5 alphanumeric characters)

- Check letter (CL): calculated using a formula provided by the registration website manager; an alternative non‑calculated letter is allowed for low‑volume models.
- WMC registration: manufacturers follow the Annex A procedure to obtain a unique WMC and must maintain PIN records.
- Duplication rule: the same 17‑character PIN must not be reissued for 30 years.
- Marking & label requirements:
- Primary PIN marking must be embossed, stamped or engraved on a permanent, non‑replaceable structure and readable from outside. Preferred location: near the front/right side for large machines.
- Product label/plate must include manufacturer name/address, model/series, the words “Product Identification Number” and the PIN; preferred placement is left‑hand side on a permanent frame.
- Concealed marking is optional for recovery/theft prevention - stored in a non‑public, durable location.
- Readability and durability: stamped character minimum depth 0.2 mm; minimum character heights: 4 mm on plates, 6 mm on machine structure. Labels must resist weathering and be hard to alter without visible damage.
