Overview
ISO 11203:1995 - "Acoustics - Noise emitted by machinery and equipment - Determination of emission sound pressure levels at a work station and at other specified positions from the sound power level" - defines standardized methods to calculate emission sound pressure levels (Lp) at operator work stations and nearby specified positions from a measured sound power level (Lw). Published by ISO in 1995, the standard supports objective comparison of noise performance between units of a given family of machinery.

- Experimental Q: Use a Q value determined experimentally for the machine family (from the relevant noise test code). Applicable when a noise test code exists and specifies this method.

- Frequency and time weighting: Emission levels are determined using the same frequency weighting (commonly A-weighted, LpAeqT) and time averaging/bandwidth as the measured sound power levels.
- Test environment: The environment and procedures for determining Lw must follow the ISO 3740 / ISO 9614 series (or compatible noise test codes); free field over a reflecting plane is the typical reference.
- Scope limits: Intended primarily for moving or stationary, mass‑produced machines (particularly with largest dimension ≤ 1 m). Not intended for highly directional outdoor sources or positions inside cabins/cabs/screens.
- Uncertainty note: Uncertainties in Lp derived by these methods are similar to uncertainties in the underlying sound power determination. Typical differences between calculated emission Lp and real in‑room measurements are commonly 1–5 dB (but can be larger).
