Overview
ISO 1271:1983 specifies a laboratory method for determining the carbonyl value of essential oils using the free hydroxylamine method. The procedure converts carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and ketones, especially ketones other than methylketones) to oximes by liberating free hydroxylamine from a mixture of hydroxylammonium chloride and potassium hydroxide (KOH). Excess alkali is back-titrated with hydrochloric acid (HCl), either colorimetrically or potentiometrically, to quantify carbonyl content. Results are reported as milligrams of KOH per gram of essential oil (mg KOH/g).
