This document specifies a test method for the calibration of resistance-heated high temperature sintering furnaces that are suitable for the sintering of dental restorations in the temperature range up to 1 700 °C. NOTE A test method for the calibration of dental furnaces that are suitable for the heat treatment of silica-based dental ceramic restorations in the temperature range between 600 °C and 1 050 °C is specified in ISO 13078:2013. ISO 13078:2013 does not include the calibration of sintering furnace used for sintering of oxide ceramics or sintered metal, in whose firing chamber restorations are sintered at temperatures of 1 000 °C to 1 700 °C.

Overview

ISO 13078-3:2023 specifies a repeatable test method for the calibration and evaluation of resistance‑heated, high‑temperature dental sintering furnaces using a separate thermocouple. It covers furnaces intended for sintering oxide ceramics and sintered metals at temperatures up to 1 700 °C (for example, zirconium oxide). The standard ensures accurate temperature measurement and repeatable sintering results-critical for strength, colour, shrinkage and dimensional fit of dental restorations.

Test cycle: Two prescribed test temperatures-1 000 °C and 1 500 °C. Heating rate minimum 10 °C/min; holding time of 10 minutes at each temperature. Temperature readings from the external thermocouple are recorded at 0 s, 15 s, 60 s, 120 s and 600 s during each hold.
Acceptance and adjustment: Determine maximum and mean deviations from setpoint. If deviation exceeds 10 °C, adjust the furnace control electronics and repeat the test.
Reporting: Test report must document furnace model and serial number, test device, setpoint vs actual data, largest/mean deviations, and any corrective actions.
