Overview
ISO 13616-1:2020 - Financial services - International bank account number (IBAN) - Part 1: Structure of the IBAN - defines the structure, representation and validation rules for the International Bank Account Number (IBAN). The standard specifies a machine-friendly textual format to facilitate automated processing and straight-through processing (STP) of cross-border and domestic account identifiers in financial and other industries. It focuses on the IBAN data elements, not on message routing, internal file formats or storage media.

- Printed representation: For readability, IBANs may be printed in groups of four characters separated by spaces (see Annex A).
- Validation procedure (summary): remove spaces, move first four characters to the end, map letters to digits (A=10 … Z=35), compute mod 97; a remainder of 1 indicates a valid IBAN (detailed example in Annex B).
- Registry and registration: National bodies register IBAN formats in the ISO IBAN registry; for registration procedures see ISO 13616-2.
