ISO 16303:2013 defines a standardized laboratory method for assessing the toxicity of freshwater sediments using the amphipod Hyalella azteca. The protocol is a 14-day and/or 28-day survival-and-growth bioassay performed on whole sediment (field-collected or spiked), applicable to contaminated freshwater sediment, chemical/industrial/municipal sludges, and sediments spiked with test chemicals. Hyalella azteca can also be used for brackish tests up to 15 ‰ salinity (with careful acclimation); the standard is not for marine/estuarine sediments >15 ‰.
