Overview
ISO 16526-3:2011 - "Non-destructive testing - Measurement and evaluation of the X-ray tube voltage - Part 3: Spectrometric method" defines a non-invasive, spectrometric procedure for measuring the maximum energy of X-ray tubes. Applicable to tank-type and constant-potential X-ray units, the method covers tube voltages from 10 kV to 500 kV and is intended to verify that the actual tube voltage corresponds to the value indicated on the control panel. This part of ISO 16526 complements Parts 1 and 2 (voltage divider and thick filter methods) and is recommended when a voltage divider cannot be applied.

- Principle: Use an energy-dispersive photon detector in the collimated direct beam; analyze pulse amplitudes with a multichannel analyser (MCA) to determine the spectrum edge (maximum energy).

MCA calibration: channel width about 0.23–0.27 keV; total MCA range ≥ 20% above expected energy. Calibration can use characteristic lines from radioisotopes (Ir‑192, Am‑241, Ba‑133).
- Measurement protocol: Start when indicated voltage is stable (or ≥30 s after switch-on if no panel readout); record at least 1000 pulses per keV. Avoid pile-up (too high count rates) which distorts spectra.
- Evaluation: Maximum energy = point where decaying slope of spectrum meets the abscissa; maximum energy in keV corresponds numerically to tube voltage in kV.
- Reporting: Report shall include reference to ISO 16526-3:2011, system ID, voltage/current/focal spot, collimator, filter details, detector/spectrometer ID, distances, date, measured max energy, deviation from nominal, operator name/signature.
