Overview
ISO 18616-2:2016 specifies test methods for handling and managing reusable, rigid plastic distribution boxes used in returnable transport systems. The standard covers boxes based on the modular areas 600 × 400 mm, 600 × 500 mm, 550 × 366 mm and their subdivisions. It is intended for general-purpose applications and supports supply‑chain integration, quality control and design verification for reusable transport items (RTIs).

- Stacking test (static load): Stack three empty boxes, apply 10% then 100% test load (measurements at 0%, after 96 h, and after 24 h relaxation) - per ISO 2234 procedure.
- Drop tests: Two sequences - cold-conditioned drop (−18 °C then drop 0.75 m) and ambient drop (23 °C drop 2.0 m), multiple impact orientations - per ISO 2248.
- Base deflection test: Measure maximum base deflection with 10%/100%/10% load sequence.
