ISO 21530:2004 specifies laboratory test methods to determine the resistance of materials used for external surfaces of dental equipment to chemical disinfectants. It defines three optional, type-test methods - immersion, spray, and contact - for assessing whether equipment surfaces undergo unacceptable deterioration or discoloration when exposed to disinfectants recommended for dental settings. The standard explicitly does not evaluate disinfectant bactericidal/virucidal/fungicidal efficacy, nor does it cover effects of mechanical stress on resistance.
