Overview
ISO 29441:2010 specifies a standardized laboratory method for the determination of total nitrogen in water after inline UV digestion, using automated flow analysis techniques - both continuous flow analysis (CFA) and flow injection analysis (FIA) - with spectrometric detection. The method applies to a variety of waters (ground, drinking, surface and waste waters) and is optimized for undiluted sample mass concentration ranges such as 2 mg/L to 20 mg/L (other ranges allowed when the upper limit is exactly 10× the lower limit). The procedure supports high-throughput automated analysis (up to ~100 samples per hour).

- Principle: Organic and reduced nitrogen species are oxidized by a buffered peroxodisulfate solution combined with thermal UV radiation to form nitrate. Nitrate is reduced to nitrite on a cadmium catalyst, then diazotised and coupled to form a colored azo dye measured spectrometrically.

- Extreme pH or strong buffering may interfere; multiple dilutions or standard additions may be necessary.
- High organic load (TOC > 100 mg/L) can reduce oxidation yield.
- Particulates >50 µm require homogenisation.
- Seawater needs adaptation for salinity and may require carrier/calibration adjustments and attention to Ca/Mg precipitation.
- Quality & safety: Follow ISO sampling/handling references; trained staff required. Waste containing cadmium must be disposed of properly.
