Overview
ISO 29481-1:2025 - "Building information models - Information delivery manual - Part 1: Methodology and format" defines a standardized methodology and presentation format for Information Delivery Manuals (IDMs). The standard prescribes how to document a use case, its business context, and the exchange requirements needed for information exchanges at identified times during the life cycle of assets (both buildings and infrastructure). Its goal is to promote reliable, repeatable and interoperable information exchange across BIM workflows and software applications.

ISO 29481-1:2025 is aligned with and complements standards such as ISO 19650 (information management/BIM), ISO 16739-1 (IFC data model), ISO 29481-3 (machine-readable IDM), ISO 21597 (linked data packaging) and ISO 12006-3 (taxonomies). While IFC and ISO 16739-1 are common implementation formats, ISO 29481-1 allows any information format that satisfies the specified exchange requirements.
