Overview
ISO 29771:2008 - "Thermal insulating materials for building applications - Determination of organic content" - specifies the equipment, conditioning and test procedures for measuring the organic content of mainly inorganic thermal insulating materials. The method determines organic content by mass loss on heating: specimens are dried, weighed, heated to burn off organics (typically in a furnace at 500 ± 20 °C), cooled in a desiccator and re‑weighed until constant mass is reached. Results are expressed as a percent mass fraction (organic content).

- Minimum specimen mass 10–200 g; thickness equal to original product thickness; at least eight pieces sampled across product surface (typical test uses ≥5 specimens unless product standard specifies otherwise).
- Remove facings/coatings before sampling; condition specimens by drying to constant mass.
- Procedure & calculation
- Weigh container, weigh container + dried specimen, heat in furnace until organics are burned off, cool and re‑weigh; repeat heating/cooling until mass is constant. Organic content is calculated from the mass loss relative to specimen mass (expressed as %).
