Overview - ISO 3853:1994 (Road vehicles towing coupling device mechanical strength test)
ISO 3853:1994 specifies a simplified mechanical strength testing procedure for towing vehicle coupling devices used to tow caravans or light trailers (vehicle categories O1 and O2). This second edition (1994) cancels and replaces the 1977 edition and defines dynamic test methods, strength criteria and marking requirements for coupling devices such as ball couplings, towing brackets and detachable ball supports.

- Mounting & anchorage: Fixings on the test bench must replicate vehicle attachment or have equivalent characteristics; anchorage positions and reference lines must be documented.
- Strength criteria: After testing, no permanent deformation, visible external deterioration or breakage is permitted. Inspection can be by naked eye, with further examination if doubts arise.
- Materials: Tests directly apply to steel and cast-steel load-carrying parts; other materials may require adapted procedures.
- Welding: Welding procedures and qualifications for welded towing devices should follow recognized practice.
- Marking: Marking requirements follow ISO 1103 and include at least manufacturer identification and relevant dimensions/positions.
