ISO 5275:2003 specifies the qualitative "Doctor test" procedure for the detection of thiols (mercaptans), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and elemental sulfur in hydrocarbon solvents and distillate petroleum feedstocks and products. The standard defines a go/no‑go (qualitative) method based on shaking a test portion with sodium plumbite (Doctor) solution and observing colour changes or precipitate formation.
