Description (English):

ISO 5951:2013 applies to all grades of hot-rolled steel sheet of higher yield strength with improved formability. The steel is killed, made according to a fine grain practice and has a suitable chemical composition, including microalloying elements, to provide improved formability. The product is intended for the fabrication of parts requiring better formability than is provided by normal high yield strength steel sheet. It is generally used in the delivered condition. Because of the combination of higher strength and improved formability, it is possible to obtain savings in mass along with better weldability. ISO 5951:2013 does not cover steel intended for boilers or pressure vessels, steels designated as commercial quality or drawing quality (covered in ISO 3573), steels designated as weathering steels, having increased atmospheric corrosion resistance, or lower yield strength steels having less formability compared with those in ISO 5951:2013 (covered in ISO 4995 and ISO 4996).

Abstract

Overview

ISO 5951:2013 specifies requirements for hot-rolled steel sheet of higher yield strength with improved formability. The standard covers killed, fine-grain hot-rolled sheet containing microalloying elements (for example niobium, vanadium or titanium) to deliver improved formability, weldability and toughness compared with normal high-yield steels. Typical product forms are coils and cut lengths (commonly 1 mm to 6 mm thickness and widths ≥ 600 mm). ISO 5951:2013 is intended for parts that need better formability while retaining higher strength, enabling mass savings and improved weld performance.

- Yield strength may be measured by 0.5% proof stress or 0.2% offset where appropriate.
Testing and sampling
- Tensile testing per ISO 6892-1; sampling rules (one tensile sample per lot, lot ≤ 50 t).
- Optional impact testing (ISO 148-1) may be agreed for thicker material.
Manufacture, surface and delivery
- Steelmaking and processing left to manufacturer unless agreed; surface supplied as rolled or pickled/descaled and normally oiled for protection.
- Dimensional and shape tolerances referenced to ISO 16160 (and ISO 20805 for heavier thickness/coils).
Weldability
- Product is normally weldable when appropriate welding procedures are used; descaling may be needed for some methods.

Applications

Fabrication of formed components where a balance of higher yield strength and improved formability is required.
Useful for applications seeking weight reduction, increased performance and better weldability while maintaining manufacturability (e.g., cold-formed structural parts and stamped components).
