Overview
ISO 7996:1985 specifies a chemiluminescence method for determining the mass concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in ambient air. The procedure covers measurement of nitrogen monoxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at standard conditions (25 °C, 101.3 kPa) and is applicable up to approximately 12.5 mg/m3 for NO and 19 mg/m3 for NO2. The method is widely used in air quality monitoring to provide sensitive, real‑time NOx data.

- Calibrate using permeation systems (ISO 6349) or certified gas mixtures; generate several concentrations across the range and plot response curves.
- Confirm converter efficiency by comparing total NOx response for varying NO/NO2 mixes; maintain efficiency close to unity.
- Conversion factors between mg/m3 and ppm for NO and NO2 are provided for standard conditions.
