Overview
ISO 9016:2022 - "Destructive tests on welds in metallic materials - Impact tests - Test specimen location, notch orientation and examination" - standardizes how to describe and report Charpy impact test specimen location and notch orientation for welded butt joints. Intended as a supplement to the ISO 148 series, ISO 9016:2022 applies to impact tests on metallic materials made by any fusion or pressure welding process and in all product forms. It clarifies specimen denomination, additional reporting details and acceptable methods (for example, macroetching) to locate notch positions.

Scope and principle
- Impact testing is performed in accordance with ISO 148-1 (Charpy pendulum impact test); ISO 9016:2022 defines how to locate and describe specimens taken from welded joints.

Method of denomination (labeling)
- A concise lettering and numbering system describes notch type, location, orientation and distances:
- 1st character: U (U-notch) or V (V-notch).
- 2nd character: W (notch in weld metal) or H (notch in heat affected zone/fusion line).
- 3rd character: S (notched face parallel to surface - “surface notch”) or T (notch through thickness).
- 4th and 5th characters: numeric a and b distances (in mm) - center of notch from the reference line and distance from weld face to nearer specimen face.
- Where denomination alone is insufficient, a sketch referencing the weld procedure should be provided.

- Notch position may be confirmed by macroetching in addition to geometric description.
- Typical examples and representations are provided to ensure consistent interpretation across laboratories.

- Specimens are tested per ISO 148-1; the test report must additionally include:
- Reference to ISO 9016:2022
- Test specimen denomination
- Type and dimensions of observed imperfections
- A sketch if required and any other contractually agreed information
