EN ISO 14627:2025 (identical to ISO 14627:2012) specifies a standardized test method to determine the fracture resistance of monolithic silicon nitride materials for rolling bearing balls at room temperature using the indentation fracture (IF) method. The method is intended for material comparison and quality assurance of advanced/technical ceramics used in bearing applications, not for other ceramic families. - Important note: K_I,IF (indentation fracture resistance) estimates resistance to crack initiation from a localized damage source and is not equivalent to macroscopic fracture toughness K_Ic determined by other fracture mechanics tests.
