Overview
ISO 10893-8:2011 - "Non-destructive testing of steel tubes - Part 8: Automated ultrasonic testing of seamless and welded steel tubes for the detection of laminar imperfections" defines requirements for automated ultrasonic testing (AUT) to detect laminar imperfections (delaminations, laminations) in steel tubes. The standard covers full peripheral testing of the pipe body for seamless and welded (except submerged arc-welded, SAW) tubes, targeted testing in the band adjacent to weld seams, and optional end-zone full-peripheral testing. It can also be applied to circular hollow sections.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test scope: Full peripheral AUT of tube body, weld-adjacent band testing (at least 15 mm each side of the weld), and optional end testing (approx. 25 mm or 2×wall thickness, up to 50 mm).
- Ultrasonic method: Pulse-echo technique with ultrasound transmitted normal to the tube surface.

- Acceptance levels and sizing: The standard defines acceptance levels (U0–U3) and minimum detectable dimensions and maximum acceptable areas for laminar imperfections (detailed in tables within the standard).
- Personnel competence: Operators and supervisors must be qualified per ISO 9712, ISO 11484 or equivalent; NDT operations authorized by a Level 3 NDT individual.
- Reporting and handling suspects: Procedures for classifying tubes as acceptable/suspect (automated triggers, marking/sorting) and follow-up/manual testing (Annex A) are specified.

- Quality control in tube manufacture: Ensures reliable detection of laminations in seamless and most welded steel tubes during or after production (rolling, heat treatment, sizing).
- Pipeline and structural tubing: Useful where integrity of tube wall laminations affects mechanical performance, pressure containment or fatigue life.
- Incoming inspection and end-of-line testing: Automated systems enable high-throughput full-peripheral inspection with automated sorting/marking.
- Adaptability: Applicable to circular hollow sections and can be combined with other NDT methods when wall thickness
