Overview
ISO 15736:2006 specifies production testing, inspection and marking requirements for pyrotechnic life‑saving appliances used on ships. It is intended to be used with the IMO Life‑Saving Appliance (LSA) Code and the IMO Recommendation on testing of life‑saving appliances to assess conformity of production units (rockets, hand flares, buoyant smoke signals, lifebuoy smoke units, and line‑throwing appliances) for ships subject to SOLAS. - Buoyant smoke signal: orange smoke, ≥ 70% obscuration, emission time ≥ 3 min (lifebuoy self‑activating signal ≥ 15 min), no flame.
- Line‑throwing appliances: range ≥ 230 m, lateral deflection ≤ 10% of flight length, wet line breaking strength ≥ 2 kN.
- Test procedures: Photometric/luminous intensity, thrust vs time, altitude/triangulation, temperature cycling, immersion, cold/hot testing, smoke density and colour, burn time, and line‑throw function tests.
