Overview
ISO 15930-8:2010 defines a PDF-based exchange format for the partial transfer of prepress printing data using PDF 1.6 (PDF/X-5). It enables colour-managed and conventional workflows where some elements required for final reproduction (for example high-resolution images or ICC profiles) can remain external to the main PDF file while still providing unambiguous identification and processing instructions. The standard supports CMYK, gray, RGB, spot colours, n‑colorant characterizations, PDF transparency and optional content.

- Interoperability caution: Use of PDF/X-5 increases the need for pre-submission agreement between sender and receiver; PDF/X-4 (complete file) is recommended where external references offer no practical benefit.
