ISO 16586:2003 specifies a method for the gravimetric determination of soil water content as a volume fraction on the basis of the ratio of measured water content mass to known dry bulk density. ISO 16586:2003 is applicable to all types of non-swelling or non-shrinking soils. It is used as a reference method (e.g. the calibration of indirect methods for determination of water content).

Overview

ISO 16586:2003 defines a gravimetric method for determining soil water content expressed as a volume fraction (volumetric water content) using a known dry bulk density. The standard applies to all non‑swelling and non‑shrinking soils and is intended as a reference method (for example, for calibration of indirect water‑content methods). The procedure converts measured gravimetric water content into volumetric water content by combining the gravimetric result with a known dry bulk density.
