Overview
ISO 17864:2005 - "Corrosion of metals and alloys - Determination of the critical pitting temperature under potentiostatic control" specifies a rapid electrochemical test method to determine the critical pitting temperature (CPT) of stainless steels (austenitic, ferritic/austenitic, ferritic). The method uses potentiostatic control to heat a specimen in a defined chloride-containing environment while monitoring current. The CPT reported by this standard is a relative performance index for comparing stainless-steel grades and is not intended to predict the exact temperature for pitting in service.

- Test cell materials inert to solution (glass, PTFE, polycarbonate acceptable).
- Solution volume to specimen area ratio ≥ 100 ml/cm².
- Specimen and preparation:
- Minimum exposed area: 1 cm²; reproducible surface finish; standardize elapsed time between grinding and immersion (≥24 h often used).
- Solution prepared from reagent-grade chemicals and high-purity water.
- Calibration & procedure:
- Calibrate specimen temperature vs. bulk solution temperature using a thermocouple placed <1 mm from specimen surface and linear regression.
- Initial temperature and ramp selection depend on expected CPT (<40 °C or >40 °C); record open-circuit potential before applying the test potential.
- Limitations: CPT obtained is method-specific and comparative; it does not directly predict in-service pitting onset.
