Overview
ISO 3763:1976 defines macroscopic methods for assessing the content of non‑metallic inclusions in wrought steels. The standard covers inspection techniques for inclusions visible to the naked eye or with a magnifying glass up to X10, and it considers only inclusions equal to or greater than 1 mm in length. Three principal methods are standardized: the blue fracture test, the step‑machined test, and the magnetic particle inspection method.

- Applicable only to ferromagnetic steels. A magnetic field and ferromagnetic indicator fluid reveal distortions caused by inclusions.
- Surface preparation: fine grinding perpendicular to rolling direction; replicas may be taken on adhesive tape for record keeping.
- Typical indicator fluid guidance in the standard: powder particle size ~0.5–1 µm, concentration ~5–10 g/L; direct current magnetization often used (guidance on current intensity is provided).
- Caution: other surface/subsurface irregularities and structural constituents can produce indications; confirmatory tests (e.g., dye penetrant) may be required.

- Routine quality control of slabs, billets, bars, forgings and semi‑finished products.
