Overview

ISO 6306:2020 specifies a standardized order for listing elements in the chemical composition of steels and most other iron‑based alloys (excluding foundry irons). Developed by ISO/TC 17/SC 4, the document addresses inconsistent element sequences across standards and supports clearer, more interoperable steel specifications and computerized data exchange.

- The standard defines the number of digits to the right of the decimal according to concentration ranges:
  - Up to and excluding 0,010 %: 0,xxxx (or H in mg/kg)
  - 0,010 % up to and excluding 0,10 %: 0,xxx
  - 0,10 % to 3,00 %: x,xx
  - Over 3,0 %: x,x
- Carbon exception: for C over 0,030 % up to and excluding 0,10 %, use 0,xx digits.
