Abstract

Overview

ISO 7524:2020 specifies an infrared absorption method after induction furnace combustion for determining the carbon content in ferronickels. The method covers carbon mass fractions from 0,004 % to 2,5 % and is designed for normal production operations using commercially available carbon analysers. Calibration is performed with steel and/or ferronickel certified reference materials (CRMs) to ensure traceability and accuracy.

Calibration and blanking: Use CRMs across each operating range (bottom, quartiles, top). Blank from oxygen, refractories, flux and accelerator shall not exceed 0,001 % carbon. For low carbon (≤0,1 %) blank correction procedures are defined.
Sample preparation: Typical laboratory samples (powder, millings, drillings) require minimal prep; remove oil/grease with high‑purity acetone if contaminated. Pre‑ignite crucibles for determinations
