Overview
ISO 8394-1:2010 - Building construction - Jointing products - Part 1: Determination of extrudability of sealants - specifies a laboratory method to determine the extrudability of sealants (mastics). The standard defines a repeatable sealant extrudability test used to verify how easily a sealant can be extruded from its packaging under defined conditions. It is a test method for quality assessment and is not intended for classification of sealants.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Principle: Extrude a measured mass of sealant from its packaging under defined conditions and determine the extrusion rate.
- Reference conditions: Test parameters such as temperature, pressure, duration, and nozzle (canule) geometry are specified; any deviation must be recorded because results are comparable only when test conditions match.
- Conditioning: Three packages (one per test) are conditioned in a regulated chamber for at least 12 hours at the agreed test temperature (default 23 ±2 °C; also 5 ±2 °C or 35 ±2 °C can be used).
- Apparatus:
- Regulated test chamber (e.g., 5, 23, 35 °C ±2 °C)
- Metal or plastic canule (default internal diameter 6 mm ±5%; alternative geometries may be agreed)
- Pneumatic extrusion gun (air up to 700 kPa; default test pressure 300 ±10 kPa)
- Stopwatch (0.1 s) and balance (0.1 g)
- Procedure:
- Prepare packaging, fit canule, purge entrapped air, set pressure, extrude for 30 s (default).
- Perform three extrusion tests using identical conditions and the same lot number.
- Results:
- Primary expression: mass flow in grams per minute (g/min), calculated from mass extruded and test time.
- Optionally expressed as volume flow (mL/min) using sealant density measured at test temperature.
- Report the individual results and the mean (rounded as specified).
- Test report must include reference to ISO 8394-1:2010, lab name/date, sealant type/lot, conditioning temperature, extrusion pressure, duration, canule details, results, density (if used), and any deviations.
Applications and who uses it
- Sealant manufacturers - production quality control and R&D to compare formulations and packaging.
- Independent testing laboratories - standardized method for customer or regulatory testing.
- Specification writers and procurement - verify product suitability for application (ease of application, tooling).
- Contractors and applicators - assess practical workability under specified temperatures/pressures.
