Overview
ISO/IEC 29500-3:2015, Part 3 of the Office Open XML family, defines Markup Compatibility and Extensibility (MCE) conventions to enable forward compatibility of XML-based document formats. Its purpose is to let documents produced by later versions or extensions of a markup specification be handled-gracefully and predictably-by applications that understand older versions. Although authored for Office Open XML, the MCE conventions are applicable to other XML markup specifications.
